Biography

Suzan Shutan a Connecticut based sculptor, painter, installation artist and curator creates immersive room sized work and smaller hybrid objects. Her work explores the architecture of a space, patterns of nature and our human footprint upon ecology. Repurposing diverse materials such as tar roofing paper, pom poms, foam, nails and flagging tape, she layers-weaves and shapes elements into patterns that multiply and statistically represent everything from the act of blushing and amount of donuts consumed nationally, to pathogens and starling birds in flight.

Shutan is a recipient of multiple grants including an Artslink grant, Art Matters grant, Berkshire Taconic Foundation grant, two NY Foundation for Contemporary Art grants and three CT Commission Artist Fellowships, She has attended artist residencies (Bemis Foundation, Yaddo, Proyecto Ace, Argentina), her work has been featured in 23 solo exhibits including Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw Poland, Aldrich Museum CT, Islip Art Museum NY, Kenise Barnes Gallery NY, Arts & Cultural Center of Florida, and in 190 group exhibitions throughout Germany, Poland, Ukraine, France, Holland, Australia, Canada, Argentina, Columbia and USA. Her work has been published in the book Paper Art Installations II, Post Road Literary Book and has been reviewed by Smithsonian Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, NY Times, Art New England Magazine, Artscope, High Performance and blogs such as Yale University Radio, Art Spiel & Joanne Mattera.
