Biography
Steve Mark, Professor of English, is Chair of the Humanities Department. He also advises the journalism program and the student-written and produced online newspaper and print magazine and is the founder of HCC’s Writing Across the Curriculum Center. For nearly 12 years, he ran the College’s Center for Teaching, which seeks to help faculty to become more effective teachers and leaders. He has worked as a newspaper reporter, a magazine writer, and a book editor.
His graduate work is in creative writing and literary studies, and his master’s thesis, an original novel, received special commendation from the School of Graduate Studies, an honor extended to only two students in the university that year.
Professor Mark believes that students learn best when they are actively engaged in course material. As a result, in his classes, he endeavors to create a community of learners where all (including him) can learn from one another. He seeks to provide a lively mix of activities and approaches to give students the tools they need to approach a range of academic and professional challenges critically and creatively.
Off campus, Professor Mark practices and teaches yoga and meditation and enjoys reading, hiking, and photography. He lives in New Haven with his long-time husband, Jim, and their very well-loved rescue dog, Fionn.
