Biography
Marina Philips is a Professor of Mathematics and the Math coordinator at Housatonic Community College. She has taught Mathematics at Housatonic College since 1997 at all levels, ranging from Elementary Algebra to Calculus. She is passionate about helping students understand Mathematics, both to see its beauty and to put it to use in their daily lives.
Professor Philips believes that education should be accessible and affordable to all, and introduced the use of Open Educational Resources to Housatonic College in 2014. Since then, many courses in the Mathematics Department have begun to use materials that are either free or significantly cheaper than their commercial equivalents.
Professor Philips was born and raised in India. She did her undergraduate studies at Jyothi Nivas College in Bangalore, India, where she majored in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. She received her Masters in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Professor Philips enjoys hiking, yoga and music. She is the President of the Board of the Fairfield County Children’s Choir, and participates in and chairs several volunteer committees at Christ’s Church in Easton.
