The Introduction to Overhead Line Work (UI), a new three-week comprehensive full-time program, aims to empower individuals in New Haven and Fairfield counties by offering essential training in line worker skills. This program not only brings attention to the skilled trades but also opens pathways for careers in utility line work across various employers. By focusing on underserved communities, it seeks to create opportunities and foster economic growth through skill development and job readiness in this high-demand field.

Brought to you by a partnership of United Illuminating (UI), the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 470-1, CT State Community College - Housatonic Campus, and The Workplace, Inc., this certificate program will teach participants how to ensure the safety and reliability of our electric system.

Held at UI’s Trumbull Training Yard, this hands-on training program will be led by CT State-Housatonic in collaboration with UI Electric Operations experts and UWUA Local 470-1 leaders. If you're seeking a career in the trades and reside in New Haven or Fairfield County, apply today.

  • Participants who are accepted into the program will receive hands-on training and practical safety instruction in the field of electrical line construction.
  • Skills taught will include the safe handling of high- and low-voltage lines, utility pole-climbing, hardware installation, and managing live lines with appropriate protective gear.

  • AHA Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED Training
  • OSHA10 Training
  • CDL permit test preparation

Tuition: $2,999.00

Admissions Process:

The program has a selective admission with 15 open spots. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible, as it will be a rolling acceptance.

  • A copy of High School Transcript/GED transcript (a college transcript can be used instead of the diploma) emailed with the Application to Housatonic email address at:
  • A copy of the current driver’s license emailed to
  • Ability to work at heights in nearly all weather conditions.
  • Your application will be reviewed, and you will be notified of next steps.
  • Upon application acceptance by CT State-Housatonic, you will be contacted by United Illuminating Company and scheduled for an evaluation at the Trumbull training facility. You will be evaluated on your ability to climb heights safely.
