Administrative Medical Assistant

Want to work in healthcare but not in a medical capacity? Do you enjoy working in office settings, performing data entry and have good communications skills? Then the Administrative Medical Assistant program may be for you.

Prepare for a career as an administrative medical assistant with this certificate that will give you the skills you need to perform administrative duties in a medical setting using specific terminology and hospital, clinic or laboratory procedures. You’ll gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the major functions of a medical administrative assistant, including scheduling appointments, compiling and recording medical charts and reports, understanding HIPPA policies, working with medical insurance, medical coding and billing, processing reimbursements and corresponding with patients, doctors and others. Note: Administrative Medical Assistants may be required to sit still or stand for long periods of time and read fine print.

In This Program You'll Learn To:

  • communicate effectively with medical personnel, patients, and vendors
  • demonstrate core job skills needed to successfully hold a position in this field
  • interview patients to complete documents, case histories, intake, or insurance forms
  • memorize and understand medical terminology and medical coding to process paperwork, assist patients and support medical personnel
  • compile and document in medical charts, reports, or correspondence and demonstrate use of an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system
  • schedule and manage different types of patient appointments using varied systems
  • identify and summarize how health insurance works and basic billing procedures
  • demonstrate awareness of ethical behaviors such as compassion and confidentiality
  • identify and demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA Rules, patient privacy rights, and provider rights
  • demonstrate how to work effectively in a team environment with diverse coworkers serving diverse populations
