Biography

Michael B. Brown joined Housatonic Community College (HCC) as Dean of Academic Affairs in 2016. As chief academic officer, his primary role is to promote and enhance academic excellence, working with faculty, division chairpersons, academic staff, and student affairs educators to further the mission and goals of the college. Dr. Brown leads an academic affairs division that includes an Associate Dean, five Division Chairpersons, the Library, the Evening Division, the Honors Program, the Academic Support Center, and the Center for Teaching. He has focused on planning new academic programs and enhancing advising and retention programming at the college.

Prior to joining HCC, Dr. Brown was Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor of Psychology at North Carolina Wesleyan College, where he served as chief academic officer and lead faculty and academic departments, the library, the registrar, institutional research, and band and choir programs. For 20 years Dr. Brown was Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University (ECU). As associate dean he advised the college’s 15 departments on curriculum, facilitated new program development, supervised the Academic Advising and Resource Center and the college’s 16 interdisciplinary programs. Dr. Brown served in a number of other positions at ECU, including department chair, director of the university’s merit scholar program, and director of graduate studies in school psychology.

As a faculty member at East Carolina University, Dr. Brown was a faculty senator for six years, and chaired university-wide committees on general education and teaching effectiveness, educational policies and planning, and advising and retention. He received the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award, the East Carolina University Scholar-Teacher Award, the 2010 North Carolina College Personnel Association Distinguished Scholar Award, and an Outstanding Academic Advisor Award from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

In 2004 Dr. Brown was selected as an American Council on Education Fellow and completed his fellowship year at Dickinson College under the mentorship of President William Durden. He was one of 18 senior academic administrators nationwide selected by the Council of Independent Colleges to participate in the 2014 Colloquium on Leadership for Chief Academic Officers and was one of 20 independent college administrators selected to participate in the Executive Leadership Academy cosponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and the American Academic Leadership Institute. Dr. Brown was active in the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences, serving on the Committee for Assistant and Associate Deans and as a mentor in the Council’s dean mentoring program.
