Biography

Kristen Carley is a Professor of English at CT State Housatonic. She earned her Masters of Science in education with a focus on English Literature from the University of Bridgeport and is certified as a Reading Specialist. Professor Carley began her teaching career in The Bronx before teaching English in the Westport public school system. Following the birth of her children, she began working at HCC in 2009 as an adjunct for the First Year Studies department and at the University of New Haven in 2016 in their English department where she taught English Literature and Composition and led a team of teachers in their Freshman Foundation class focused on Project Based Learning. At HCC, she has been active with our Center for Teaching, developed the Reading Portfolio Assessment for HCC’s First Year Studies reading classes, and launched Connecticut’s first Supplemental Instruction program for a community college. Each of Professor Carley’s roles, in and out of the classroom, has been on student development and the learning experience where she strives to strengthen academic success for all of her students. When she isn’t working with students, Professor Carley can be found exploring bookstores for her next favorite book, creating a new recipe in the kitchen, or her favorite pastime, creating memories with her husband, two sons, and her sweet beagle, Mocha.
